RTO status meanings: every RTO tracking label explained
RTO stands for Return to Origin. The “origin” is you, the sender. An RTO parcel is one that could not be delivered and is being sent back — not one a customer received and chose to return. Below, every status label sellers actually search for, and what each one is telling you.
All RTO statuses at a glance
| Status | What it means | Where the parcel is |
|---|---|---|
| RTO | Return to Origin | Before the return begins |
| NDR | Non-delivery report - an attempt failed | Parcel still near the buyer |
| RTO Initiated | The return has been raised | At the destination hub |
| RTO In Transit | Travelling back to you | In the courier network |
| RTO OFD | Out for delivery - back to you | On the final reverse leg |
| RTO Locked | Finalised against the order | Anywhere after initiation |
| RTO Freeze | Not a separate status - see Locked | - |
| RTO Delivered | Back with you, not the customer | Journey complete |
| Courier Return | Another name for an RTO | Any stage |
| RTO Exception | Something needs attention | Any stage |
Read this before you rely on any label. Status wording is not standardised. Delhivery, Valmo, Shadowfax, Ecom Express and Meesho’s own panel each phrase these differently, and some use labels not listed here. The journey a returning parcel takes is always the same; the words printed against it are not. Your supplier panel and your courier’s tracking page are the authoritative source for your account — if what you see disagrees with this page, trust your panel.
What is the full form of RTO?
RTO = Return to Origin. R for Return, T for To, O for Origin. The same abbreviation is used across every Indian courier and marketplace, and it means the same thing in each: a delivery attempt failed and the parcel is travelling back to the seller.
On Meesho specifically it means the order never reached the customer. No revenue was earned, and the stock is coming back to you — what one RTO order actually costs.
What does NDR mean, and how is it different from RTO?
NDR is a non-delivery report, and it comes before the RTO. A delivery attempt failed and the courier has logged why: nobody home, address unreachable, buyer refused, phone unanswered.
The distinction matters more than any other on this page. At NDR the parcel is still out for delivery near the buyer and a re-attempt is often possible. This is the last point at which the order can still be saved. Only once re-attempts are exhausted does it become an RTO.
What does RTO Initiated mean?
Delivery has failed and the return has been raised. The parcel is still at or near the destination hub — it has not travelled back yet. You may also see this as RTO Started or RTO Declared, which different carriers use for the same point in the journey.
Some carriers will still accept a re-attempt request immediately after initiation, before the parcel joins the reverse leg. It is worth one phone call to the courier helpline with the tracking number, but do not count on it.
What does RTO In Transit mean?
The parcel is physically on its way back to you, moving through the courier network in reverse. This is usually the longest stage, and often slower than the outbound trip, because returns are lower priority than deliveries.
There is nothing to do here but wait. Do not restock the item yet — it is not in your building and it is not yet countable inventory.
What does RTO OFD mean?
OFD is Out For Delivery — so RTO OFD means the returning parcel is out for delivery to you, on the last leg back to your pickup address. It is the reverse-direction twin of the OFD you see on an outbound order.
The trap: OFD is not “received”. Re-inducting stock at this point means counting inventory you do not physically have, and the final leg can still bounce or go missing. Wait for RTO Delivered. What to do when you see RTO OFD.
What does RTO Locked mean?
Read locked as finalised, not frozen. It marks the point where the failed delivery stops being provisional: the return is confirmed and the order is categorised as an RTO rather than left pending.
It applies to one order. It is not a status on your account, your payout is not held, and it is not a penalty or a strike. The three fears the word “locked” triggers, answered in full.
What does RTO Freeze mean?
There is no separately documented status called RTO Freeze. It is worth saying that plainly, because a lot of pages will define it for you anyway.
Sellers searching this are, in almost every case, looking at RTO Locked and reaching for the more alarming word to describe it. The fear behind the search is the real question, and the answer is no: your account is not frozen, your money is not frozen, and nothing has been withheld. A single order’s return has been finalised in the system. See RTO Locked above.
If your panel genuinely shows the word “freeze” against something other than an order — on your account, your payments, or your catalogue — that is a different mechanism entirely and not an RTO status. Raise it with support rather than reading it off a glossary.
What does RTO Delivered mean?
The parcel has arrived back with you or at your pickup location. Despite the word “delivered”, nothing reached the customer — it means delivered back to origin. This is the single most misread status in ecommerce: a seller sees “delivered” and reads it as a completed sale. It is the opposite.
When a parcel reaches RTO Delivered:
- check the item is in resaleable condition before restocking it
- write it off if it is not — a damaged return is a full loss of the product cost, not a shipping cost
- file a claim if it came back damaged or short, within your courier’s window. Claims have deadlines, and sellers who miss them write off losses that were recoverable
What does Courier Return mean in Meesho?
Courier Return is another name for an RTO. The courier could not complete the delivery and is returning the parcel to you. It describes the same event as RTO, from the courier’s point of view rather than the marketplace’s.
Do not confuse it with a customer return, which is a genuinely different event with different costs: a customer return was delivered, accepted, and then sent back. A courier return never arrived. Why the two cost you differently.
What does RTO Exception mean?
Exception is standard courier terminology for a shipment that has hit a problem needing attention — it is not specific to returns. On an RTO it usually means the parcel’s journey back has been interrupted: misrouted, held at a hub, address unreachable at your end, or damaged in transit.
Unlike the other labels here, this one is worth acting on. An exception that sits unresolved is how a parcel quietly becomes a lost parcel, and a lost parcel is a claim — with a deadline.
Which stage can you still act at?
Only one, and it is the earliest. NDR is the exception: the courier is reporting a problem while the parcel is still near the buyer. If your courier or platform surfaces NDR reasons, that is the one queue worth watching daily — a wrong pincode or an unanswered phone can sometimes be resolved into a successful second attempt, which converts a total loss into a sale.
Everything from RTO Initiated onward is administrative. The parcel is coming back and no intervention changes that. The useful response is not to fight a single RTO, but to check it was costed correctly and to reduce how often you see one.
What does an RTO cost you?
Meesho does not charge a return shipping fee when an undelivered order becomes an RTO, so there is no line item to spot. What you have still spent by this point is the packaging, the dead weight of moving a parcel that earned nothing, and the advertising that produced the order. None of it is recovered, and there was never any revenue on the other side.
A customer return is charged a weight-based return shipping fee and an RTO is not, so per order the return usually costs more. The catch is that RTO leaves no line on your statement at all, which is why it goes unmanaged for far longer. Why RTO is the loss you never get billed for.
How do you see these statuses less often?
The largest lever is usually payment method — an order that is already paid for is far less likely to be refused at the door than one asking for cash. More on the COD and prepaid trade-off. After that: accurate listings, so buyers are not surprised by what arrives, and faster delivery, so there is less time to lose interest.
Put your own RTO rate into the Meesho price and profit calculator and move it a few points either way. It costs RTO as a separate line, so you can see exactly what each percentage point is worth to you per month.
